Q: Are you a 501c3 IRS charity? Are my donations tax-deductible?
A: No. We are just two guys who jumped on a plane and came down here to directly help survivors. People have a need and we have the ability to raise funds, buy them medicine, food and shelter and get it to them. It’s that simple. Donations go into Nate’s personal PayPal account and we withdraw the funds via ATM in the Dominican Republic to buy supplies. We plan on filing for non-profit status after this urgent time has passed. If you have a large gift you would like to make (over $1,000) and want it to be tax-deductible, please e-mail or call us and we can process that through another charity we work with.
Q: Can I send you supplies to you? Can I collect items and ship them to you?
A: Everything that we need to get to survivors in Haiti is available across the border in the Dominican Republic (the D.R. is not as impoverished as Haiti.) From medicine to medical supplies, from food to tents, it’s all here for purchase... and often at a lower cost than what you would pay in the US. The time and expense of shipping items from the US makes that way of helping impractical. With money in hand, we can buy what’s needed and get it to the people who need it quickly. The best way to help is to donate and spread the word by e-mail, Twitter and Facebook.
Q: Where are you guys based while doing this work?
A: We are going back and forth from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and various places in Haiti. We are sleeping in hotels, cars, on friend’s couches in Santo Domingo and in a tent... it all depends on what we are doing and where we are at.
Q: How long are you going to be doing this? How are you able to volunteer your time?
A: We are planning on running supplies to Haiti until February 27th. We have put our personal and work lives on hold for this time and are dipping into personal savings to make it happen... but we’re happy to do it!
